When you began to work as a professional trader, you hade a certain number of accounts under management. This implies that you managed different accounts always separately without establishing an hedge fund? How many were they? Along the following years their number increased to a maximum of? I think that in the beginning the fees obtained by managing a little number of accounts weren’t enough to allow to you to earn a living: had you a second job? I hope you can answer to these questions as I would like to begin a career as a professional stock trader and manage money of some clients. Saturday, December 25, 2010 Thoughts from the Guru: Compassion; Gurus; Now; Meaning Hi Ed I just finished reading a book on the Guru at the ashram and thought I would follow up with certain passages from it. As I was reading the book, these passages struck me as relevant to some of our talks. The italicized words are his. The rest are the biographer's. I have a feeling that all of this may already be known to you ... and that you'd asked me the questions for me (and not for yourself). :) On compassion and "pain in the world" "Yet another fallout of this experience was his heightened sensitivity to the feelings of people around him. It seemed inconceivable to Jaggi that people around him should be in such states of discontent when his own life was exploding with ecstasy. There were times when just the sight of an unknown person on the street in a state of misery was enough to make him weep. Later, he was to learn to harness that reaction. An emotional reaction to suffering is something he now allows himself only on occasion. 'When I see a broken branch of a tree, for instance, my energy responds to it, but my emotions do not. Once in a while I allow myself the luxury of responding emotionally, but its a luxury for me. One is still very much open to suffering but it is not more a psychological and emotional response." On the Guru "There is an ability to relate deeply to people's emotional needs, and an equal ability for dispassionate and uncompromising analysis. This unusual combination is probably what makes him, as he has often said, a guru with whom both approaches are possible: gnana and bhakti i.e. knowledge and devotion." "If you sit with him, everything in you should feel threatened. You want to run away, but there is something in you which keeps on pulling you towards him - you can then assume that he is your guru. If you feel very comfortable around him, he is not. Maybe he's your friend; maybe he's a good man; maybe you should seek his blessings. But good intentions and a pleasant nature do not make a guru. A guru's intention is to awaken you, not to put you to sleep. He is somebody who disturbs all kinds of conclusions that you have drawn. He is not a solace-peddler. He is there to assist you towards your liberation". "A guru's job is to transmit. Transmission is much more important than teaching. Teaching is only a way of knocking on the door" On now "When you simply look without the dimension of your logical thinking, there is no time and space. So without procrastinating, I'd like to reserve my plane ticket to visit in April for the Breathwork. In order to do that, I'd like to know if I can have your permission to attend the April 7th Austin Tribe meeting to pollinate, and if so, does it start at 5pm, and if I can't get a flight to arrive early enough on Thursday the 7th, is it OK if I arrive at the ranch Wed evening/night and stay over for the night? Thursday, December 23, 2010 Disturbance in the Force Hi Ed, I had a dream about you in 2005, after receiving and reading your book 'The Trading Tribe.' In the dream, you were at a kind of cosmic control panel. It was dark, and there were thousands of points of light on the giant screen in front of you. The scene was reminiscent of Captain Kirk, sitting at the helm of the Starship Enterprise, looking out at the universe of stars, only in this case - in my dream - the points of light were people, all the people that you interact with all over the world through this interface on the web. I actually felt your presence in the dream, which I found most curious and interesting. I never started or participated in a trading tribe, but recently a friend suggested we start something that sounds very similar to your idea. This got me thinking of you, looking over the book, and led me back to your board. Then I got to looking at all the pictures you post, and it came to mind that I should warn you about the mad dog copyright troll that is on the loose on the internet called [name]. The only reason I know of them is that they sued me over a snip of an article that someone uploaded to my website. (They like to sue the smallest of small potatoes. They sued a lady here in Boston who wrote a blog from the perspective of her cat - a blog with approximately zero visitors.) The suits generally demand $150,000 and forfeiture of the domain name. It is a basic shakedown. Anyway, their strategy hasn't worked out so well and now they're suing folks over images: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/12/death-ray-lawsuits/ Visiting your site again tonight reminded me of that dream so many years ago, and that I was one of those points that you are somehow connected to, and I decided to do a little pulsation dance to get your attention and let you know about this disturbance in the Force. Wednesday, December 22, 2010 6:35 PM Awe Ed, I was listening to some people talk about certain sports figures and have also heard others talk about other people and say "they are in AWE of them". Got to thinking that; I'm not in "awe" of anyone. I have very great respect for their talents and perhaps how they trained to develop their talents. But an not in awe of them as people or their accomplishments. At this moment am wondering if I am missing something, some feeling that I should have but don't ... makes me pause and consider my values and judgments. After pausing and considering still back to where I was. Pleas keep up the good work. |

Wednesday, December 22, 2010 Cows Hi Everyone, At the workshop I commit to buying a ranch on which to raise cattle. Some of you volunteer to support my project. If you have a continuing interest in supporting my process, please respond to this email update. Those of you who do not respond are taken off the distribution list. After the workshop I travel to west Texas to look at ranch properties. I see between 20 - 30 properties, ranging from 25 acres to 300 acres. I also see a lot of cows. As I tour the properties I feel a sense of calm as I take in the land and watch the animals meander about. I also feel joyful about the possibility of slowing down my life, connecting with my land, and becoming self-reliant. I feel a strong desire to be part of community where people work with their hands, depend on their families, and support their neighbors. I am taking two weeks off for the holidays, after which I plan to resume my search. In the interim, I subscribe to Acres Magazine and buy several books on farming. After the holidays, I intend to travel once more to Texas, and am also planning visits to Washington State, Alabama, and Maine. Thank your for your support. |
