Bumper Sticker Process
Hi Chief,
Hope you are doing well.
I read a lot of old posts about the Bumper Sticker Process in the FAQ section. This is something I want to work with at our tribe meetings. I cannot find any post with a description of the process or guidance about how to follow it.
Can you share some resources about the process please?
Thank you.
Best, |
Thank you for raising this issue.
In The TTP Workshop I occasionally conduct the Bumper Sticker Process, in which participants write down a major life intention on a bumper sticker, drive it around the room, gather feedbackon it and then revise their bumper sticker for the next round.
The process generally shows (1) that people generally do not have much clarity about a major life intention and that (2) sharing your intention with others helps you clarify it.... |

More on OJ Futures
Ed:
I see that someone has sent you JO's wild swing and you have asked I wonder how you feel about buying in at the highs, after such a big move.
It seems like everybody is trading the same thing.
Speaking about feeling. I have closed my shorts and have gone long and after me going long it has dropped today. How am I feeling ? I am wondering for sure that if this fizzles out , am i going short again? But there is a sign of improvements, I have not cared to look for why it was going down or why it has gone up recently....

Puerto Rico Tribe Rumblings.
Hi Ed,
Greetings from surfers paradise Pine Grove, Isla Verde, Carolina. Deeply grateful for the knowledge and free content you share on The Trading Tribe. I consider you my virtual mentor and part of my circle of influence. The support group at Trading Tribe showed me the path of persons I want to model to lead a happier life.
Actualmente estoy en Republica Dominicana pero me encantaría poder conocerlo y/o involucrarme con Trading Tribe Puerto Rico. Mi pasión por las matemáticas y la geometría me trajeron al Trading Business and will love to learn from the most renowed trend follower in market history.

Nice Catch
Dear Mr. Seykota,
In this page: http://www.seykota.com/tribe/risk/index.htm
Under the sub-title: Non-Balanced Distributions and High Payoffs
I think each toss the expected value for a 3:1 payoff bet-it-all strategy, should be : 0.5*3-0.5*1=1
So, after 10 tosses the expected value should be : 1000*(1+1)^10=1,024,000
What do you think?
Best Wishes |
Thank you for reading carefully and for spotting an error in my math - since 2003.
I have it now, correctly, per your observation. |

More on Self Pity
Ed,
Thank you for your response. My initial burst of anger gives way to wonder and curiosity when I realize the truth in your statement.
After taking some time to think about the subject, I resolve to change my actions. For example. When I read the response to FAQ, I want to curl up and sulk, but I make an agreement with myself earlier in the day to phone a friend. Instead of breaking my agreement in favor of what makes me feel comfortable, I phone him anyway. Our talk uplifts my spirits.
I realize that I have a deep familiar connection with self pity. I hold it close to me and use it early and often. I cannot define the feeling in words that I feel when I think about life without using my 'self pity' card.
Before now I did not have a clear purpose for my Tribe, it just seemed like the next best step in my process. I now see my Tribe as a means to help me in furthering my process,
I recommit to moving forward with my own process.
Thank you for the jolt.

Late Rent as an Entry Point
Hi Chief,
Good news. My tenant has the rent past due for 4 days. I finally get the emotional incident which gets me.
I feel anger, insecure and annoyance. They take advantage of my kindness and I hate them. They don't answer my call.
I also feel some excitement and wanting to laugh. And I worry this might ruin the process I dread.
And I feel glad about it.

Tribe Report - Dealing with Hand-Me-Down Anger
Ed,
Following on from the Tribe leaders report I am reporting in my hot seat. It has been some time since I was on the hot seat and overall its been successful around this rock.
As we said from the tribe check-in. I identify a pattern from my Dad around getting angry with people questioning his orders and get angry and just fly off the handle.
We work on the routine.
I get really angry, I feel this rage, it stops and then I trace back one time to my dad shouting at me for questioning him somewhere. He wouldn't listen and I realised this was my behaviour with my kids.
We take the roles and I am my father and we enact our the bad rock. We then work on a good rock and some better strategies to set boundaries and listen and take time/empathy with people. I accept the rock from my grandpa and react much calmer.
I have tried the rock out several times and its getting easier now. There are no bouts of anger i can't control and they are less frequent. Understanding your behaviour at this autonomic level and dealing with it is very powerful.
Thanks Tribe and Ed for his process to help me with this.
Regards |
Thank you for sharing your process - and for taking a stand in the matter of handing the pattern on to your kids. |

Wants a Mentor
Hello Ed,
I am writing to you to ask a couple of questions. But before I ask, I will give you a brief introduction of myself. ... I'm currently a college student at the University ... I come from a small suburb of ... I really have a deep passion for trading. I'm not interested in learning in some get rich quick seem that most people tend to associate with trading.
I truly find the discipline and the work process in picking the right stocks extremely intriguing. I was wondering if you would be able to mentor me through the process and pass your knowledge on to me. If not, it's totally understandable.
Maybe you could possibly refer me to someone who is interested in mentoring someone and leave me with a couple of guidelines to follow so I go in the right direction.
Anyways, thank you for you time Ed.
Hope to hear from you soon.
|
Thank you for raising this issue.
You might consider extending your inquiries somewhat beyond picking stocks - say, into methods for knowing how much stock to pick and when to sell it.
For example, I recall a man who builds a company around a piece of software that picks stocks. He claims a 85% success rate - showing how 85% of his picks increase 1.5% or more in the 60 days following his pick.
So I run a test on picking every stock every day and seeing how many of these picks go up 1.5% in 60 days. Big surprise - I get about 85%, Also 85% of them go down by that amount in the same 60 days.
You might also consider looking into methods for risk control and for maintaining your trading mojo during drawdowns.
You might consider taking your feelings about <wanting a mentor> to Tribe.

Drawdowns
and Diversification Ed:
This feeling of knowing depth of ... draw-down has come back again because all my shorts have had run up in synchronized manner in last 15 days. Everything CL, SB, KC, CC, JO, CT, HO, HG, LBS, GC, SI, ZB, ES had one directional move. Up. That made me wonder what parameters are there to define diversification.
|
Thank you for raising this issue.
You might consider defining Diversification, (the degree of different-ness between your portfolio components) in a couple ways.
1. You can assess the degree of dynamic orthonormality between components.
2. You can assess the difference in variance of returns between your portfolio with diversification and the single-component portfolio with the lowest variance.
You might also consider taking your feelings about

Carry System
Hello Ed,
I am copying your reply on www.TradingTribe.com here:
"Thank you for noticing the additions to the TT_Chartbook Page.
I recall your GRAB system.
I now have a buy-the-dip system up and running, and theoretically profitable, although it under performs a simple Donchian system.
If you have an example of a fundamentally different system with a positive back test, I can code it up, check results with you and then post it to the TT_Chartbook Page as an on-going exhibit."
I am confident I can produce a profitable exponential lag crossover system. However, I am not sure if that is fundamentally different.
Alternatively, I can go away and work on a system that is based on "carry". This is fundamentally different, although I need to spend some time testing to confirm it is profitable.
I am open to your suggestions. |
Thank you for helping to extend and refine the examples for the TT_Chartbook page and for the Trading System Project.
I already have numerous examples of crossover systems - and they tend to perform in a similar manner to Donchian support-resistance systems.
I would like to see what you can come up with for a carry system. |

Wants to Advertise Tribe
Mr. Seykota,
I would like to start a Tribe in my city as there does not seem to be an advertised Tribe around my location. I spoke to one of my friends about forming a Tribe and he is keen on joining as well. We already meet once a week to discuss books (usually psychology and trading literature) we have read each week so it would be a natural transition for us to form a tribe. I know of a few other people that I will approach this week.

Wants to Get Back on Track
Ed,
I feel my personal progress toward right livelihood stalls. My hope to host Tribe meetings fails to yield a single meeting. I have multiple people who show interest but I have not been able to have a meeting, perhaps I don't have the willingness or commitment to lead a tribe yet. When I think of leading a Tribe I feel uneasy, fear, and little confidence.
I feel myself seesaw, nothing seems to keep my attention. I feel unfulfilled. Things seem to head downhill when I make the decision not to invest in my system development because I fear I will not "do anything with the system". I don't want to waste the time and most importantly money if I don't feel committed 100%. In the process I break my agreement with the coder...
I'm not sure how to get back on track. |
Thank you for sharing your process and your feelings.
You might consider starting by acknowledging you actually do like the track you currently travel - and have little demonstrable intention of getting on a different one.

Elliott Wave Software
Dear Chief,
I find the linked article last night and wonder if you are still working on coding and testing a mechanical Elliott Wave system.
Here is a link to the article: "The Implementation of Automatic Analysis of the Elliott Waves in MQL5" https://www.mql5.com/en/articles/260
In the article, the author shares his process of converting the Elliot Wave analysis rules into a series of logical steps and finally into code that automatically implements the analysis technique to plot and identify waves.
I find it to be an interesting demonstration of how to deconstruct complicated methods that are dependent on judgement into a mechanical process.
Looking at the block diagrams and code gives me inspiration to attempt a similar automation of my own discretionary trading process.
The author's process looks thorough and thoughtful.
I feel glad he shares it and want to pass it on to others.
.
Please let me know if you find it useful.
Thank you. |
Thank you for sending me the link.
I don't see the part in which the author presents a back test of the system - or derives optimal values for the parameters.
I do see the part in which he explains the factors that prevent him from doing so.
You might consider researching new ideas carefully before you jump into them - or recommend them to others |

Austin Tribe Meeting Report: Schools; Boundaries; Relationships
Ed,
The Tribe member in the first hot seat wants to start a new school. A school that is more about inspiring students to learn. He hears from college professors and other parents who are upset with the public school system. They are angry because the state funded schools encourage an environment that concentrates on socialization and indoctrination instead of the education of their children. The Hot Seat feels discouragement at the beginning of the process because he can't see how he can start his new school. He thinks he must quit his job to start the project. He remembers as a young boy when food was scarce. The Hot Seat feels sad and afraid about putting his family through that ordeal. The Chief and Tribe help him realize that he is already in the business of providing the learning materials for the new school. He knows teachers that have an interest in this new venture. He feels relief about not having to quit his job. The Tribe Member is also glad he can participate in his son's education since he is very young and attends school. At the end of the process, the Hot Seat feels confident that he can accomplish his goal.
The next Hot Seat is about setting boundaries. His mother tells friends and relatives about things he is doing in his life. The Tribe Member tells her things in what he feels should be private conversation. He hears back from other people what he told her in confidence and becomes angry. During a role-play with other Tribe Members, it is clear his mother doesn't want to respect his boundaries. When he becomes angry and insists on her doing what he wants she runs out of the room crying. She doesn't want to change the nature of the relationship and tries to use guilt to keep the status quo. The Tribe helps him realize that he can create his own borders with her by not telling her anything he doesn't want broadcast to others. I can relate because my mother was the same way. She would always tell things on me to other people and I would become angry. Instead of crying, she would always say, " okay " and keep on doing the same thing over and over again.
Yet another Tribe Member wants better relationships. He always ends up dating women who are emotionally unavailable. He wants someone warm and kind. He remembers a time as a young boy when there was a sweet little girl in his neighborhood who lives in a nice house. She tells him to come over to her house but his parents won't let him. He feels very sad. A Tribe Member pulls up a chair next to him and challenges him to speak to his ideal imaginary woman. This interaction seems to work for the member and he can see a path toward interacting with the kind of woman he is seeking. I can relate I seem to always connect to emotionally unavailable women as well. I feel sad about it too.
Another Tribe Member has an issue about moving to the country and leaving city life. A different Tribe Member wants to take his trading to another level. Yet another wants to back test his trading system. This Tribe Member was assigned to perform a specific task. However, there were no processes done for these members.
I am not getting anywhere with my animation project. The Chief tells me that I need to lose weight. I am extremely over weight and use food to medicate my feelings. Losing weight will help me feel my feelings and give me more confidence to get what I want out of life. Another Tribe Member told me that he has success with changing a behavior every three weeks. He also said to go slow. I am using this approach.
Currently, I my goal is to lose 25 pounds. I have much more weight to lose than that but I want to start there. I am going to report my progress and feelings to FAQ. The behavior I am changing now is not eating late at night when I get off work. I notice that I also skip breakfast. I am now eating breakfast and after work I get myself a bottled water and don't anything after I get off work at 10:00pm. Mainly, I eat three meals a day with a snack in between. I definitely need to modify other things that I do. I will modify other behaviors every three weeks. I start on 10/03/15 at a weight of 349.4 lbs and ended the week on 10/10/15 at a weight of 346.8 lbs a loss of 2.6 lbs. As of 10/17/15 I weigh 346 a loss of .8 lbs.
I notice feelings of sadness and anger related to my mother's death. I miss her. I also have dreams about my father stepping in front of me and taking away my girlfriends. I feel anger and a sick feeling in my stomach. I remember my mother would always say if she was angry about a situation she would say, " I am sick and tired of this" then she would proceed to do something about it. I am adopting that attitude with some of the things in my life such as my weight and cleaning up my apartment. I also notice I am having more energy. |

Tribe Report - Three Processes
Hi Chief,
We have 3 processes in Oct 9th meeting.
One member wants to make more friends but feels internal resistance to do so. Tribe help him recall when he was young his father asks him not to play video game with his friend. The father thinks those are not good kids and will affect his future. Tribe role play this and help the Tribe member share feeling with his dad.
A member feels nervous with his landlord, Tribe help him to recall when he is young, his mom steps into his room and asks him to stop watching TV. They have an argument. Tribe role play this situation and help the member to practice skill to work with both his mom's feelings and his own feelings.
A member becomes impatient when taking his mom to see doctor. He thinks his mom is over concerned about her health and asks too much questions. Tribe role play this and help the member to practice sharing feelings with mom and doctor during the visit.

The Wooden Bowl
Ed,
I guarantee you will remember the tale of the Wooden Bowl tomorrow, a week from now, a month from now, a year from now.
A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year - old grandson.
The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered
The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor.
When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.
The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. 'We must do something about father,' said the son.
'I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.'
So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.
When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food.
The four-year-old watched it all in silence.
One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, 'What are you making?' Just as sweetly, the boy responded, 'Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up. ' The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.
The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.
That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason,
Neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled. |
Thank you for sharing your parable with me. |

Tribe Report
Ed,
6 members present, 1 absent.
The morning of Tribe we receive news that Member #11 moves to our city and plans to resume attending Tribe from our next meeting. I feel very happy about this - I enjoy his "have a red hot go" approach to hot seats.
We start at 7:30 pm with drumming, check-in and some exercises. Members are happy with the higher attendance. We go over the schedule for Tribe over coming months.
I ask "do you have an issue you want to work on?"
#1 Resumes trading after a break for other work. Doing more exercising. No issues.
#2 Happy about new grandchild. No issues. Has stopped trading due to limited results.
#3 (me) My last hot seat worked really well. I feel very much better about the events from the past that so disturbed me. I look forward to my fourth Breathwork session, in December.
An issue. Simple involvements with bureaucracies tend to turn into protracted sagas with a lot of things going wrong. Currently have an issue with my broker about tax forms, which continues unresolved for 9 months. Previously I spent a lot of time organising a funds transfer at a reasonable FX commission, but later found I needn't have made an FX conversion myself, saving a few hundred dollars and several days work.
#6 Talks about self-improvement with enthusiasm. Various techniques are working well. Some conflict with people sharing his house. He ends up with his own bin in the kitchen.
#7 is moving to the US and has two more Tribes before she leaves. Arrangements are going well and her partner is being very helpful. No issues. She brings along some books she is not taking and we pick some to take home. I sense some sadness that she is leaving but also good wishes for her move.
#6 feels his issue is not worthy of a hot seat.
So I appoint #7 as process manager for my hot seat. I have a couple of goes at ramping up the feelings of frustration and anxiety as I "know" things will go wrong and I have no control, time is passing and nothing is getting done.
I have an aha moment; this feeling is just how I felt in junior high school. I talk about this. I wanted to learn and I had no access to books, libraries, etc. Then we move to a remote farm and it gets worse.
I realize I get into this "innocent victim" state, and feelings well over. I cannot think straight and I cannot solve the problems. I realize that in junior high I have many opportunities and options that I could take advantage of, but didn't. We go through these. In any case, I have many resources and options now.
My old rock was something like
1. There is a problem.
2. I cannot do anything.
3. It is or could be really bad.
4. Feel anxiety.
5. Feel frustration.
6. Latch onto the first solution and push it as hard as I can. Do not try another solution.
My mother donates this rock.
New rock, donated by a friend.
1. Feel the frustration and anxiety.
2. Use the resources you have access to - people, web sites, support groups, bulletin boards, books, support staff, etc - to find solutions.
3. Do not limit yourself to one solution.
4. Ask people for help and advice.
5. Use the 5 minute planner technique. Write down ideas non-stop for 5 minutes.
6. Explain it to the duck (explain the problem and how you have tried to solve it to an inanimate object. This solves many problems. The duck is a formidable problem solver because you magically realize what you have not tried while explaining it to him). Programmers often use this technique - "you cannot bother anyone else with a problem until you have explained it to the duck".
7. Use mind maps to develop ideas.
8. Accept that things take time.
Someone makes a suggestion about the problem which seems promising.
I feel a little guilty at having a whole Tribe just for my hot seat. I skip the reenactment, perhaps for that reason.
Still on checkout for the evening everyone expresses satisfaction with the night's proceedings.
A few days later I try the suggested solution, but it doesn't work. I feel anxiety that my account will be closed for noncompliance with the request to fill in the tax form. I log on to the text chat support line for the broker. I focus on keeping my options open and looking wide for solutions. I remain calm and open. I try to focus on helping the support person solve the problem. The support person suggests a solution which solves the problem and which was actually very simple. I upload the new forms with no problems and I expect the issue to be closed shortly.
I notice how often this particular pattern occurs in my life - I have a problem and anxiety and stress stop me from finding a good solution. Now I feel I have a better chance.

Thank you for sharing your process and for documenting your meeting.

Newbury Tribe Check In
Ed,
Good morning from Newbury. I hope my email finds you and your family well.
More than a year goes by since my last email to FAQ. In this time the Newbury Tribe continues but meets only as members request. I also continue to attend the London Tribe when it meets. I find time flies and I feel happy, content and self-assured despite a busy work schedule and the usual curve balls life throws.
A few months ago I introduce TTP to a few UK friends from Holotropic Breathwork workshops in the UK. TTP strikes a chord with these friends and as a result I help start a new Tribe in Hertford UK.
I feel intense happiness and joy at the chance to share my limited TTP knowledge with a group that "throws caution to the wind" and goes for it.
I learn how intense and emotional sessions can be when the hot-seat goes with the flow. I grow in confidence as I process manage a number of long and intense sessions with the Hertford Tribe. I find attending three Tribes with different people, different processes and different dynamics works well for me.
I feel a need to connect and meet with you personally. I wonder if you might consider visiting the UK sometime in the future or if you have a workshop date in mind that I might attend?
Many thanks for continuing to support TTP – you are helping to improve my quality of life.
Take care. |
Thank you for sharing your process.
I generally host Workshops in response to demand.
I generally circulate between Puerto Rico and Texas and occasionally host Tribe meetings in both places. |

Son Wants Banjo
Hi Chief,
I buy an bigger amplifier for my son's guitar today.
My son tries to talk me into getting a banjo.
I talk to him for a while about that I am going to pick up an instrument but not decide yet which one to learn.
He tells me that banjo goes with me. But I like the variety of the sound effects the electric guitar makes. And most of all I feel I can't commit to daily practice. I am learning baton with my Sifu and I am not sticking to daily practice well. I think I find an entry point.
Thanks, |
Thank you for sharing your process.

Back-Testing Donchian System
Hi Ed,
I backtested the Donchian 20/5 day system. Results are attached. Here again the system makes money but not a lot in the last 5 years. I have several ideas/questions related to the model but would like to instead ask for your thoughts on next steps in the research/testing process. I hope all is well.
The rules:
Calculate 20 day max and min close/5 day max and min close
When today's close is the 20 day high get long, when today's close is the 20 day low get short
When long and we hit a 5-day low close exit and await next signal. When short and we hit a 5-
day high exit and await next signal.
I tried this model on the same 17 markets. The same caveats apply here:
I assumed one contract of each market traded
I used rolling front month contracts from Tradestation
I assumed entry on the actual high/low closes
I did not include commissions or slippage
Thank you,
 |
Equity Curve
|
|
Thank you for sending me your results.
You might consider the following extensions for your work.
Implement some kind of Bliss Function, such as MAR or Sterling Ratio so you can easily compare backtesting results.
Implement equal-risk position sizing rather than one-contract-of-each position sizing.
Test your model over a wide range of parameter values, say, other than 20 and 5. |

Employment and Unemployment
Ed,
The official. unemployment figure is now down to 4.9%. However, the U3 unemployment calculation, which is the one touted in mainstream media, excludes anyone unemployed that has not looked for work in the last 4 weeks.
That's right, so if you don't have a job but you looked for a job 3.5 weeks ago then you are considered unemployed.
However, if you are unemployed and haven't looked for a job in 4.5 weeks you are no longer considered unemployed, you simply no longer exist according to the U3 figure.
The result is that after 4 weeks of not looking you fall off the radar and the U3 figure goes down. Wonderful metric eh?
In order to see if people falling off the radar have found work or simply no longer exist we can look to labor force. When we do it becomes clear that while U3 is moving down so too is labor force.
This means people are not finding work they simply disappear out of the labor force and so no longer exist according to the unemployment figure we all follow.
|
Thank you for sharing your perceptions.
As the Govopoly System
assimilates the free-competition sector, we might expect unemployment to rise - and for official reports to deny this.

One-Year Update
Dear Ed,
I see a fellow Workshop attendee sends in his one year update and decide to submit an update as well.
Following the San Juan Workshop in 2014, I begin integrating Heart Rock into my day-to day process. I generally continue to have some feelings of "not good enough" and use behaviors that make me anxious and overcommitted to avoid the feelings.
A few months after the Workshop, I'm seeing improvement in my relationships and most notably with clients. I continue working on my trading and follow FAQ. When I see that there will be a San Juan Trading Tribe I apply and I am accepted.
I attend the meetings and experience feelings related to wanting affection, loneliness, commitment, boundaries, clarity and agreements. The work that happens in Tribe has profound impact on my life and seems to be having a profound impact on the lives of fellow Tribe members.
I document each meeting and submit my reports to FAQ.
Throughout the Tribe sessions, our specific goals and dramas are unique to each of us yet they share underling feelings and components. We have a feelings connection that makes it possible for the work one Tribe member does experiencing and accepting their feelings to really help the others as well. We often notice that one person "does the work" for all the others that are supporting his process. This seems to intensify for me with each meeting as we collectively discover and learn how to our process as a Tribe.
With each hot seat, (including other people's) in find an incremental increase in my willingness and facility with which I can embrace all of my feelings, even the ones that are unpleasant.
It continues to feel counter-intuitive and unusual - almost dizzying and disorienting to welcome "unpleasant" feelings.
Sometimes I begin using old habits and rocks when a feeling that is unpleasant comes over me without my realizing how I'm feeling. As soon as I see even a glimpse of a result I don't like I look for the feeling I'm trying to avoid and get into it. When I realize that I'm having a feeling I don't like and that I'm using a behavior o avoid it, I just slow down and let the feeling happen.
This is a great new skill and behavior for me to have. I am much more efficient now and find my relationships, self image, behavior and results are more in line with my stated objectives and desires than ever before.
As a result of implementing Heart Rock, there have been many significant positive changes in my life. The changes continue to build towards my objectives.
- I have an excellent relationship with my wife that becomes closer, more intimate and more effortless with each opportunity to share feelings.
- I experience a deeper sense of responsibility and connection with my children.
- I find it easier to work, to be profitable and to enjoy my service to others.
- Difficult relationships are an area where I have used medicinal rocks a lot in the past.
I use Heart Rock to successfully complete difficult negotiations and arrive at agreements, set boundaries, enforce boundaries. I also use Heart Rock to experience and share feelings of fear of conflict without hiding, evading the issues or invalidating others.
I'm embracing my feelings, taking responsibility for my intensions and getting the results I want.
The San Juan Tribe has wrapped up the current session.
In the months since our last meeting, I find that I feel extremely close to the other San Juan Tribe members. I speak with several of the Tribe members very often and enjoy periodic calls with others. The Tribe feels like an extension of my family, I can say without reservation that I feel connection, love, support and warmth for and from the Tribe.
I feel tremendous gratitude and warmth for the Tribe members and a special smiling feeling of thanks for Ed teaching and sharing ways for people to meet, share feelings and support each other.
I believe the impact of TTP and Heart Rock is profoundly positive and far reaching.

Distancing and Drama
Chief Ed,
I recall hearing the term <boundary management,> for the first time, from you, many moons ago. Since then I am paying much more attention to this concept. A lot changes for the better, from then to now.
This term, and <testing willingness> also known as <invitation,> appear to be closely related.
I wonder if you agree and if you do, if you might be willing to describe, for your point of view, what the essentials are with respect to the relationship of these two concepts.
For example, if I invite/test willingness of PersonX to discuss a specific topic, and PersonX clearly signals total unwillingness to do that, I wonder if PersonX is in fact executing essential (and well-developed) boundary management skills.
If I then respect that signal, am I in fact completing a well-formed test-of-willingness, etc.
Also: if, after a time, I then decide it is best for me to now put some explicit, respectful distance between me and PersonX, I wonder if, in your view, whether this is simply good and essential boundary management, or ... drama.
Certainly, such distancing, initiated by me, has at least the potential to elicit drama from PersonX. I specifically wonder if the distancing is drama per se, or simply good boundary management on my part, with potential to entrain drama in PersonX.
My Best Regards, |
Thank you for raising this issue.
The way I read it:
You: I want to discuss this.
Other: Not willing.
You:
I want to go away now.
Other: [Crying] Don't leave me.
You might consider
You: I want to discuss this.
Other: Not willing.
You:
I wonder if you can tell me more about that ...
Other: OK. I feel like you pressure me, etc ....
You: Thank you for telling me. I wonder if you can say more about that. |

Puerto Rico Workshop: One-Year Report
Dear Chief and Supporters
It is one year since the Puerto Rico workshop. My snapshot/goal is:
- I have 100 clients in my fund.
I get 5 new clientes since the workshop.
Our offshore fund is up 15% YTD and we are in the 10th position in a ranking of hedge funds ytd.
It has been a long journey and deep reflections and how to conquer new clientes. I´m using my new rock and the relationship with my partners is much more open and truthful.
We hire a new and a really good marketing person to raise asset for our firm, and since i work there is our first good person in our comercial area.
Our macro discretionary fund, in spite of not be systematic, is utilizying some concepts of systematic trading such as equal risk per position, following trends and total heat risk. We change our style and we are not using more high conviction trade (higher risk in one position) than we used.
I still have some issues with my trading and the most frequent is that bad trades in one instrument influences the next trade in the same asset. For instance. If the last trade in USDCLP is a loser, if our indicators are showing new possible trade, sometimes i don´t pull the trigger or i use a smaller position size in the instrument. This behaviour is harming the returns of our local fund that i´m the fund manager. I´m working in this issue in my local tribe.
I´m still don´t know how or why we raise just USD 120MM and we have less than 15 clients in both funds.
Our offshore fund has 10 years of track-record and we just have 2 down years. We returned 7% annualized with 7% volatility an our better years were 2008 with 12,5% and 2011 with 11% returns. The risk/reward is good and it doesn´t match with the assets under management and the number of clientes that we have. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you Ed and the supporters. |

You might consider taking your feelings about <your clients> to Tribe.

Right Livelihood and Giving
Hi Ed,
I am so glad to read this on your FAQ. I feel that you are very smart and or very lucky to have found your true calling (may be born that way!).
Here many of us are still struggling to find out what our true calling is. And yes it's not only making money. I also benefit from your post in the way that I still have to devote my focus on what I really want to do in my life.
The hunch is that if I have a lot of money then I would like to help lots of people. As of today I sponsor 1 boy for his studies from the beginning of his academic career. I recently started gifting to a very small girl whose father lost his life at our borders. Your this answer benefits me deeply. Thank you once more.
Ed Says:
I do not have a "causal" answer to your why question - other than to notice that mostly I do what I do.
I wonder what you might like to do with your life - especially if you feel you can do anything you want to do.

Thank you for sharing your process.
The act of giving freely helps to heal both the receiver and the giver. In Tribe, we give the Heart Rock, freely, when we sense willingness to receive it.
Under the Govopoly system, compulsory redistribution creates resentment and separation for both parties.

The Silver State
Hi Ed,
Once upon a time I dreamt you and I were sitting at a table holding a silver pendulum over a map of the US. Each time we held it over Nevada, it oscillated noticeably. We looked at each other with surprise.
During the next few days, silver made it's biggest move up in years.
Early this morning I dreamt my of my long-deceased guru, who said "I think you should go to Lake Tahoe." I said, "for a few days?" To my surprise, he said, "for the rest of the year."
So, I wonder if by some coincidence you might be there too sometime soon.
best regards, |
Thank you for sharing your dream.

Wonder
Ed,
Ed helps many people through his replies, posts, books, workshops, etc.
Is Ed aware that he is in the heart and or mind of so many all around the world?
How does he feel about it? What is his intention? Why does he help and guide so much?
I wonder. |
Thank you for sharing your wonder.

Tribe Management
Hi Chief,
Thank your for your advice.
Yesterday after I send you the email about my feeling of running my Tribe, in the evening we have a wonderful Tribe meeting. I share my feeling of running the Tribe and members ask me to continue running the Tribe and appreciate my work.
I feel warmth and moved. When I look back, I feel lucky I have been running this Tribe for 4 years and getting a lot good processes recent months. It's like trading, often when I feel most down, hopeless and exhausted and wanting to give up, then comes the real big trend.
We have 3 process in the meeting and I get my chance to have a process to work on my feelings about being patient to my parents.
Yes you are right my new members manage my process well. Actually I have been on hot seat 5 more times this year and my PM are all new members. I might have some rocks with feeling of wanting to form a core team who can stay permanently with me.
Now I feel some relief. Even without permanent members, I can still have new members manage my processes. I realize today my Tribe is not as bad as I thought, I have some weird pessimistic depression and mood swing recently after I exhaust myself with long hours and long days of system development and coding. I haven't have that since college. Now I'm back on my feet.
The beauty of TTP is that once you get the machine running, the process evolves itself during the entire evening. One of the new members he already knows how to manage the process and I let him run most of the process for another member. Another lady who is the 2nd timer, burst into tears a few times because the Tribe help her break through the blankness she always has and see what happens between her and her mom after her parents' divorce.
During the last round of the role play, she wants to play with the toughest mom and wants me to play. When I enter into her bedroom and ready to lash out on her, she look at me in the eyes and tell me " mom, I want you to be happy." I have plan a lot of words to scold her and she petrifies me with a pure feeling. I stand there for minutes and don't know what to say, and this time is my mind's turn to go blank.
During the check out, I tell the Tribe member how I am astonished by her beautiful, candid move in the last run. This is what always happening in our Tribe, after each round of role play, the client unintentionally becomes more and more proactive and intercepts the drama at an earlier stage each time, until in the last round the drama can't even start.
We checkout the meeting near mid night. And everybody says we need couple days to digest the meeting.
I have been very focused and exhausted on coding my system most part of this year, I am getting some good result, even backtesting with the worst 100% skid. My Tribe building was a little behind due to shift of my focus this year. Now I feel confidence in trend trading which I never had before. I am rolling out a full mechanic system soon, trading a broad range of global instruments, and pretty soon I am starting the most fun of the job, fund raising!
Tribe meetings become more important for me now than ever. This year our family had a trip with another family on lake Powell and after that the friend asks me to manage their money. Llast week a friend, a store owner asks me to manage his retirement after he finishes repairing my car for me.
I know that to become a good business man, there are lots of things I need to polish, including my English as you mention. I start to enjoy the bit by bit ground work of creating my business and build my own name.
Money is not the ultimate personal goal for me, I carry no penny with me when I die. It's the value of serving others in my life and creating something I never dare to dream before.
Thanks, |
Thank you for sharing your process and for documenting your meeting. |
